Microstill

Crafting The Perfect Beginning

For many of our experiments, this is where the magic starts. The E.H. Taylor, Jr. Microstill, named after the father of the modern bourbon industry, was installed at Buffalo Trace Distillery in 2007. Harlen Wheatley, Master Distiller, worked on the customization of the Microstill for more than two years so it would have the capabilities to carry out Buffalo Trace’s creative (albeit sometimes crazy!) experimental program.

A combination pot still and column still, the Microstill is both versatile and innovative, allowing us to try experiments on a small scale so our main production capabilities are not interrupted.

The innovative Microstill has created countless whiskeys now aging in our warehouses and even produced Clix Vodka. The Microstill is a key element in our Experimental Program and can been seen on our Hard Hat Tour.
